Water. Sewer & Drainage. Waste. We cover it all.
Seattle Public Utilities delivers essential water and waste management services to 1.5 million people in the greater Seattle area. We’re a community-centered utility that focuses on protecting public health and the environment through safe drinking water, effective drainage and wastewater systems, and solid waste services. We’re working hard for you — and for future generations.
Protecting the environment
We care about the environment, and not just within our city limits. We protect water at every stage of the water cycle, make integrated and equitable investments in water management, reduce carbon pollution, and actively work toward having zero waste. Some of our recent initiatives include:
South Park Water Quality Facility
We’re currently planning a water quality facility to treat stormwater from the drainage system before it flows into the Duwamish Waterway. Before we can operate the new water quality facility, we’ll construct a pump station that will ultimately send flows to the water quality facility. This station will help move stormwater to the waterway and reduce flooding on streets.
The Greenest Fleet
We’re committed to reducing our fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while continuing to expand our use of greener equipment technologies. Our Green Fleet Action Plan tackles fleet emissions, with specific goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2025 and to be carbon neutral by 2050. The Green Fleet will further establish Seattle as a model for US cities in combating climate change.
Ship Canal Storage Tunnel
We’re building a 2.7-mile underground storage tunnel to significantly reduce the amount of polluted stormwater (from rain) and sewage that flows into the Lake Washington Ship Canal, Salmon Bay, and Lake Union from our sewer system.
